7/27/13 July backcountry tarpon fishing in Islamorada

Well we did it again.. caught the mullet good on our way to the backcountry.  Set up early for some more tarpon fishing.  Had to wait on the tide a bit, but had a big cuda early that almost jumped in the boat, a bonnethead shark, and then double header tarpon!  Two fish of about 60 lbs ate at the same time.  We managed to get both to the boat!  Not an easy thing to do with fish that size.  After that we fished a bit more and had one more pickup and drop the bait, but it was all over again by 10:00 or so.  Have an evening tarpon trip tomorrow with the same guys and have some leftover mullet and crabs so we will give the local fish nearby a try.

7/26/13 Tarpon fishing in July in Islamorada

Well despite the west winds from colliding frontal boundaries we were able to get on the tarpon once again today.  Not a red hot bite but we made the most of the 2 bites we got – a nice 40 lb fish and another 100 lb fish (not pictured).  Mullet were not real easy we got in the backcountry a little later than usual, but with one throw after some idling around we were able to catch a dozen or so which served us well.  Once again the bite was early and by 10:00 or so it was done with.

7/24/13 Tarpon are still biting good! (at certain times!)

Young nate the great (10 years old) and his dad were with me today.  We fished a 3/4 day.  We caught mullet first thing on the way to the backcountry.  The channels were holding heavy with smaller tarpon again.  Many jump-offs but we did nail a few.  Nate caught a 10 lber and then at the end caught a 70 lber!  We caught those 2 fish out of about 6 bites, it was all over by 10:00.  Way to go!  We also had plenty of sharks and finished the day with about 15 snook.  The ticket lately has been fishing early morning falling tide, it is good until 10 or so, and then the afternoon incoming tide has been good too.  Of course this will change a little every day!
