7/24/13 Tarpon are still biting good! (at certain times!)

Young nate the great (10 years old) and his dad were with me today.  We fished a 3/4 day.  We caught mullet first thing on the way to the backcountry.  The channels were holding heavy with smaller tarpon again.  Many jump-offs but we did nail a few.  Nate caught a 10 lber and then at the end caught a 70 lber!  We caught those 2 fish out of about 6 bites, it was all over by 10:00.  Way to go!  We also had plenty of sharks and finished the day with about 15 snook.  The ticket lately has been fishing early morning falling tide, it is good until 10 or so, and then the afternoon incoming tide has been good too.  Of course this will change a little every day!

7/23/13 Good tarpon bite

Well a day off yesterday and back at the tarpon slaying today.  We went 0 for 5 this morning it was a heartbreaker.  Lots of smaller fish that just would jump and throw the hook right away but still 30-40 lbers.  We had fresh mullet we caught in the backcountry.  But we didn’t give up we caught a few more mullet and did some snook and snapper fishing which was very good, then tried for tarpon again the last 45 minutes of the day.  With the switch to the incoming tide they still bit good, we caught 2 out of 2 to end our day.

7/21/13 More july tarpon in the florida keys

Well fished Mark the last couple days.  Yesterday was a struggle bait was very very tough we managed only a handful of mullet in the morning after over an hour, we ran and fished them in one of the channels with the last 30 minutes of falling tide around flamingo.  Had one likely tarpon pick up and drop bait, and had a lemon shark to the boat.  Then tide quit and sun rose and we were out of fresh baits.  So looked for more mullet as the tide rose on the flats but there were very spooky.  We tried a few spots for trout and ladyfish, no ladyfish and caught a handful of trout.  Found another mullet mud on the way home and caught a half dozen, then tried fishing around islamorada.  Had one blacktip and that was about all she wrote.  Today was a different story bait was still not easy but we made out already, got about 10 in the morning and started fishing by 8:30.  Had one shark on and saw some tarpon but no bites.  Decided to try around a few islands which worked out nice caught several snook and snapper, then found some more mullet and caught another 10 and tried some other channels closer to the gulf.  We caught 2 out of 3 tarpon one nice big 90 lb fish, plus a hammerhead shark and some blacktips.
