6/21/13 Summer time tarpon fishing florida keys

Well today the june florida keys fishing tarpon was a little tough.  We had some mullet still fairly lively we caught yesterday while fun fishing and a few other dead baits.  So we headed back towards the everglades for some flamingo tarpon fishing.  However we fished a few different places and saw no fish rolling nor had any bites aside from a few sharks.  We caught a few small fish to bend the rod and to save for bait, and even ran and tried off east cape but alas no tarpon to be had in the backcountry.  We did catch some bigger things and then some more mullet on the way back towards islamorada. We gave it one last shot around downtown islamorada and ended up getting a nice 110 lb tarpon to end the day plus a big ‘mud marlin’ at the same time – double header!  Great way to end our trip sometimes it pays off to work hard all day for them.

6/19/13 June Islamorada tarpon fishing in the evening.

Went out this evening for a june night tarpon fishing trip in islamorada.  We had some dead mullet from the other day, they were very tough to find today went early in the morning and again in the afternoon before my trip but only caught one!  We also had some crabs, pinfish, and a few pilchards.  We fished some local channels near bud n marys, incoming tide all evening.  Had a couple sharks early and did have a mystery bite on a crab not sure what it was though.  Later we did hook a big 120 lb tarpon that didn’t fight much at first though came alive later on.  We caught him and then had one other likely tarpon bite that zipped about 25 yards of drag and then pulled the hook – no frey on the leader so likely a tarpon.  Drifted crabs near sunset in an ocean side channel but no more bites.

6/17/13 Tarpon fishing in Flamingo

Well haven’t been targeting the poons for a few days, took a couple days off and the other trips I had were for other things.  But it’s been good from what I hear the boys around town said yesterday morning they bit pretty well locally around islamorada.  We went into the backcountry today looking for sharks which we actually had trouble finding.  But we did catch 1 out of 3 big tarpon back around flamingo on the middle of the in-tide.  Around 9:30 they shut off and no shark bites so we went to a hole out in the gulf.  We caught 4 big goliath groupers there and caught a nurse shark, but no other blacktips, bulls, or lemons.  However I’d rather catch big groupers and tarpons any day!!!  Same crew again tomorrow they are after smaller stuff but maybe we’ll talk them into trying for tarpon just for a little while – we loaded up on mullets this afternoon because there has been a lot more bait around this past week and a half.
