9/10/15 September Tarpon Fishing in the Florida Keys

Fished a full day today.  I had told my clients that fishing has been a little tough for tarpon so we originally had plans to try some other stuff.  I ran into the backcountry and tried chumming some live bait in a channel and while doing that, of course we started to see several tarpon roll in the channel.  We caught plenty of small live pinfish though I knew mullet would probably be preferential for the tarpon.  The guys were asking me about catching them so I said lets take a quick look and see if we can’t find some mullet.  Luckily enough out off the bank we came across a ball of bait, no birds on them or anything but it was calm enough to see them rippling on the surface.  I made a few throws and we caught got a good crack on caught a cooler full.  We went back and caught the last trickle of falling tide, and within 5 minutes hooked a nice 50 lb fish that we fought for 20 minutes and Eric landed.  After that we set back up, still saw a few fish rolling and the tide was ripping in now.  Though no bites we moved around a few times, but the big herd of fish we saw an hour before seemed to have moved out with the tide.  We still saw a handful roll here and there, but did not have any other bites.  We finished the day trying to catch some snook, no luck with that but we did have one baby tarpon we pulled the hook on, then caught a half dozen nice snappers and a few trout for dinner to finish our day, plus some big ladyfish.  I’m fishing these guys again Saturday, I kept plenty of bait on ice so we will be fully prepared first thing in the AM.  Hopefully they are still there.  If you are looking to go fishing, there are still shots at tarpon through September however bait is often the tough thing to find.  However next Wednesday or so we will have good ‘incoming’ morning tides that make bait more consistently easy.  1 for 1

9/6/15 September Florida Keys Tarpon Fishing

Fished today and gave the tarpon a try.  Bait was OK this morning but will probably be tough for the next week again or so as we have falling tides in the early morning.  That has been much more difficult for the bait catching.  Anyways we fished around flamingo tried some different channels from yesterday first thing.  No love again not even any shark bites, the sharks are few and far between too.  We then ran and fished the same channel I tried yesterday which had been good a couple weeks ago.  We fished hard and after 20 minutes or so we finally go our bite and Steve landed a nice 60 lb tarpon.  That was it though no more tarpon or shark bites, did not see much rolling or any other signs of life.  We decided to finish the rest of the day with trout and snapper on the light rods.  That fishing was very good.  1 for 1

9/5/15 September Tarpon Fishing in Islamorada

Had some days off and was out of town for a few days but got back to the grind today.  Being September this is our slowest month of the year so I may only be fishing a couple days a week.  Though I am booked tomorrow and then pulling my boat to have some work down on Monday, I will be running another small skiff in the mean time.  Anyways today we fished a 3/4 day and got out on the water early.  Caught some bait on the way back to Flamingo, nice that they were fairly easy to catch.  Anyways we did not see much at all for tarpon I fished a couple different channels and in some areas off the shoreline where tarpon had been a week ago.  Though did not see much of anything, not even a shark bite, things were very tough.  Anyways after a couple hours of that we bailed and decided to bend the light rods with some snapper and trout fishing which was pretty good and we were able to get some for dinner.  Tomorrow we may try again for a little bit for tarpon in the morning but likely not going to devote the day to it, right now you have to take what you can get fishing is not easy!  0 for 0
